    non-fiction is writing that deals with real, not imagined, people, places, things, and events 
    6 Types of Non-fiction

    memoir – an autobiography that focuses on one incident or period in a person’s life (ex: Knight)

     autobiography – story of a person’s life, written by that person (ex:  Diary of Anne Frank)

    biography – story of a person’s life, written by someone other than that person

    essay – a short work that presents a single main idea, or thesis, about a particular topic (ex:  Getting it Right at Ground Zero)

    speech - a public address that was originallydelivered orally

    informational texts – aim to convey or explain information


    Author’s Purpose:

    expository - to inform

    narrative - to express thoughts, ideas or to tell a story

    descriptive - to portray a person, place, object or event

    persuasive - to convince people to accept a position and respond in some way
