Dear Parents and Guardians:
Springtown ISD’s Board of Trustees recently approved a proposal to renew a random drug-testing program for students in grades 7 -12 who are involved in extracurricular activities. In addition to perhaps helping deter students from potential drug use, our hope is that the program will help our employees identify and support students who may be in need of additional direction and assistance. An effective drug-testing program may assist in:
- Preventing injury, illness, and harm resulting from the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol;
- Supporting a drug-free educational environment;
- Deterring student use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol; and
- Educating students regarding the harm caused by the use of illegal and performance-enhancing drugs or alcohol.
The drug-testing program is outlined in FNF(REGULATION), and complies with policy found in FNF(LOCAL). A copy of the drug-testing program can be accessed through our District’s homepage (www.springtownisd.net) by clicking on “Community Resources” and then “Random Drug-Testing Program;” hyperlinks there will direct interested parties to FNF(LOCAL), FNF(REGULATION), and a Parent Consent Form. Information regarding the substances for which tests may be conducted, the testing/sample collection procedures, and the testing results/consequences can also be found through the link.
Our Administrative Team hosted “Q&A” sessions regarding the program at our Administration Building from 5-6 PM on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th. A summary of “Frequently Asked Questions” about the program has been added to the District’s website.
In order for students in grades 7-12 to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities, consent to participate in the random drug-testing program must be provided by the parent or guardian of any student under age 18 as well as the individual student. Failure to provide a signed consent form will result in ineligibility for extracurricular activities.
On behalf of the District, thank you to the many parents and community members who have encouraged and supported the renewal of this effort. In reviewing our program, stakeholders will likely note the many similarities ours shares with other districts across the state. The challenges our students face are significant, but not at all unique. Collectively, partnerships between homes and schools are our best chance to encourage the development of healthy minds and bodies capable of leading in the future.
